Washington, DC Internship
Washington DC, DC, United States
Job Type: Full-Time

Care2 is based in Redwood City, California and maintains an office in downtown Washington, DC. Starting in 2006, Care2 will provide an unpaid educational internship opportunity in Washington for qualified college-age interns to gain hands-on experience. Interns will learn valuable job skills and gain knowledge about the nonprofit sector, social networking Web sites, online advocacy and fundraising, while also interacting with professionals at nonprofit organizations.

Among the projects that interns may be assigned to work on are:
  • Writing and Content Development This may include brainstorming new topic ideas for the MovingIdeas.org e-newsletter, for readers interested in public policy and progressive politics. Or it may involve research and updating of blog entries for Care2's new website and e-newsletter for nonprofit professionals who work in online advocacy, member recruitment and fundraising.
  • Web Community Management This may involve moderating a discussion board on MovingIdeas.org, or identifying Care2 members' posts from Care2Connect, or blog entries from Care2Share, that deserve promotion to a wider group of Care2 members.
  • Legislation Tracking Interns may participate in tracking key pieces of progressive legislation in Congress, helping to select issue topics and create urgent call-to-action messages that are sent to subscribers to Care2's Voter Alert Service (still under development).
  • Marketing and Communications Interns may place ads beside targeted keywords from search engines, or create new e-cards and petitions that have potential to create "viral" member growth. Interns also may help Care2 expand the number of nonprofit groups that we serve, by evaluating industry conferences to determine whether and how Care2 should participate, or by analyzing a new nonprofit sector to guide Care2's entry into that sector.
  • Competitive Analysis Interns may profile progressive blog sites and other online media outlets used by nonprofit groups for advocacy, list growth and fundraising campaigns.
  • Research Interns may be asked to interview nonprofit professionals and use their input to create online surveys, podcasts, featured articles, and recommendations to guide development of new "Web 2.0" services and identify process improvement opportunities. Interns also may be asked to track and analyze online activism by Care2 members, to identify "superactivists," "mavens" and other types of highly engaged members who make major contributions to the Care2 community.
Screening Process

Care2 will conduct a telephone interview with candidates for internship opportunities. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
