Intern - Software Engineer

HomeAway is the worldwide leader for vacation rentals on the web.  Our online portfolio includes the leading vacation rental sites in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany.  We are a local, high-growth e-commerce company, and we are searching for talented and passionate software engineers and aspiring web marketers to join us for internships summer of 2010!
 
Our development interns participate in all aspects of our engineering process and deploy working software to production.  This includes everything from gathering requirements to designing solutions and even supporting deployments.  We address a wide array of computer science problems including advanced web applications, cutting edge user interfaces, scalability and performance of applications, intelligent search algorithms, global data distribution and monitoring of distributed systems.  You will work along side of a highly experienced team of engineers from various academic and industry backgrounds.   Most of our teams are looking for at least one intern this summer, but here are a few specific examples of the types of projects in which you may be involved:
 
Development Teams & Projects:
 
HomeAway’s Distributed Services Team invents, engineers and supports distributed services that power HomeAway’s growing network of Vacation Rental websites throughout the world.  We build highly reliable and scalable distributed data systems to support massive worldwide site traffic.  Some Intern project examples are:  The HomeAway Facebook Application, Search Type-Ahead Completion, designing and building a generic service monitoring and maintenance application, HomeAway Mobile and HomeAway Mash-ups.
 
Vacation Rentals’ Development Team engineers and maintains a user-friendly and powerful marketplace to facilitate e-commerce between Home Owners and Travelers.  Development is fast-paced and completed in a variety of technologies, such as Java, Spring, Jscript and Perl, to meet the needs of our clientele while retaining our leading position in the industry.  We integrate and leverage other HomeAway team products, such as Calendar and Geographical services, in an effort to make a more desirable user-experience.  Internship duties can include developing new code, maintaining production code and performing quality assurance testing.  The most recent internship project was developing the database-driven “Traveler Resources” section of the Vacation Rentals website.
 
HomeAway’s Ideal Intern:
 

• Currently pursuing a BS, or MS in computer science or a related technical field
• Excellent software development skills (Java, C++)
• Organized problem-solving skills
• Experience with web application development
• Knowledge of UNIX/Linux/OS X or Windows environments
• Knowledge of Java, XML, JSP and databases a plus
