GENERAL JOB SUMMARY
The position is responsible for working with the VP Strategic
Sourcing and Managers to develop and implement risk management
strategies using hedging techniques and buying plans to stabilize
future price volatility and margins for co-manufactured goods. This
position will ensure that processes and materials used at
co-manufacturing locations are utilized in the most cost effective
manner to insure company objectives are achieved. All “go to market”
strategies will support department risk management philosophies within
company policy parameters. This includes the sourcing, negotiating and
qualifying of contract manufacturing agreements in support of Advance
Pierre’s product requirements. It includes “Make vs. buy” analysis
and Total Cost of Ownership analysis to evaluate manufacturer
competitiveness. Also included are responsibilities for continuous
improvement programs with the contract manufacturers.
Category responsibilities include building forecasts and report
visibility using Coverage Models to develop and communicate buying
strategies consistent with other competitive cost programs to limit
market impact to the company. The position will have responsibilities
for co-manufacture qualification programs and will have an
understanding of internal capabilities and needs in order to secure
components that meet specifications and deliver on time for a
competitive total system cost. The position will play a key role in
the company’s annual Budget planning process and be responsible for
meeting those objectives within the plan.
The position will include category spend analysis and development of
reports for communication to Management on purchasing performance. The
manager will engage and participate with cross-functional
implementation teams charged with design for new products, new
technologies, synergies, new materials and contract manufacturing
needs. The position will be expected to spend considerable amount of
time at each co-manufacture location allowing them to become the expert.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Negotiate prices and pricing agreements for best value and to
assure supplies including contracted products.
- Lead efforts
in the research, selection, and management of co-manufacture
- Participate in regular performance, business,
and financial reviews with co-manufactures. Ensure that data is
accurate and maintained in a timely manner for a supplier scorecard.
Ensure that suppliers are informed of their scorecard results and
that appropriate actions are completed.
- Prepare yearly and
product pricing forecasts, i.e., budget costs, for the company’s
annual operating plan and Budget. Review this forecast on a regular
basis with the Vice President Strategic Sourcing to report
variances, review supporting rationale and make recommendations.
Update the Vice President Strategic Sourcing with critical price
trends or issues immediately.
- Monitor relevant commodity
markets and information needs to ensure forecasting accuracy for
contract negotiations and product pricing.

and facilitate operational reviews to comply with the AdvancePierre
Vendor Approval process.
- Identify, implement, and monitor Continuous Improvement and
on-going cost reductions in conjunction with the productivity
projects identified. Continuous Improvement efforts should align
with the Technical Services projects or be part of the Strategic
Sourcing targeted goals. This includes regular site visits at
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience level which is
normally acquired through working in an equivalent field directly
related to the job being evaluated (minimum 10 + years’
experience) with additional graduate studies a plus.
- Requires specific industry knowledge and experience in proteins
and related commodity hedging techniques and other strategic
initiatives used for risk management purposes.
- Demonstrated track record of achieving results in a team based
and collaborative environment.
- Experience in building
business and supplier relationships and negotiating with senior
- Working knowledge of statistics, cost
systems and product costing especially for evaluating contract
- Knowledge and experience of food
processors/operations is preferred and direct protein experience a
- Strong communication, oral and written, to multiple
levels of employees.
